Despite being knocked out of the 2023 AFC Asian Cup in the group stages, the Malaysian football national team went out with a bang after drawing 3-3 with South Korea, ranked 23rd in the world and one of the heavy favourites to win the whole tournament.
Qualifying for the prestigious tournament on merit for the first time in 42 years, the national team was eager to represent the Jalur Gemilang in Qatar but for one Harimau Malaya player in particular, playing in the 2023 AFC Asian Cup was the culmination of a tremendous battle spanning 2 years.
We are of course talking about Selangor FC captain, Brendan Gan who recently took to his social media accounts to detail the inspiring journey he went through to represent Malaysia, which he dubbed “The 2-year Asian Cup Dream”.
In case you didn’t know, Brendan had to put his football career on hold in July 2021 after he revealed that he was diagnosed with early-stage testicular cancer.

Thankfully, the 35-year-old managed to remarkably recover in less than a year after the diagnosis after undergoing surgery and treatment. However, when he was first diagnosed with cancer, his dream of representing Malaysia at the 2023 AFC Asian Cup seemed ever fleeting.
Taking to X, Brendan Gan shared,
“The dream evolved every minute of every day since watching this squad qualify for the Asian Cup in Bukit Jalil. First was the dream to survive.”
“Second was to get back onto the field for club and then perform well enough to reach the next step. The next step was to wear the colours of Harimau Malaya again.”
In the post, Brendan also shared a photo of him with a fully shaven head following treatment for testicular cancer and another of him playing at the AFC Asian Cup in Qatar as well as a photo of the Harimau Malaya squad for the tournament.
He further asserted,
“To be able to join this amazing group of 26 to go to battle on Asia’s biggest stage was an honour.”
“This is just a reminder. Everyone faces their own battles, big and small. Persistence in your dreams is key.”
Meanwhile, in another X post, Brendan showed the dichotomy between the lows of 2 years ago when he was diagnosed with testicular cancer to the highs of facing international football megastar and Tottenham Hotspur forward Son Heung-Min on the pitch when Harimau Malaya played against South Korea.
The Selangor FC skipper wrote in the caption,
“Crazy to see what can happen in a 2 year span! Taking on cancer to taking on Son Heung-Min. Arguably just as hard as each other. It was an honour, Harimau Malaya.”
In the replies to the X post, many Malaysians were amazed at Brendan’s journey and hoped that he continue to perform well for both club and country.
One commenter said that Brendan’s story is incredibly inspirational while another wished him continuous good health.
Brendan’s sharing also caught the attention of Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh who took to her official X account to ask Malaysians to read and understand Brendan’s struggles.
