Many Malaysians rely on domestic helpers to assist them in running their household. From cooking to cleaning to taking care of the children, most of these domestic helpers end up feeling more like family than anything else.
Which is why it is so heartbreaking when it is time for the domestic helper to leave.
This is exactly what happened for Mengli Tan, who took to her Facebook page to showcase the agonizing goodbye of the domestic helper who had been with her and her family for 6 years.
She wrote, “Thank you for working hard for this family for 6 years. Now, you are going to find your own happiness. I wish you all the best in the future. I am really reluctant (to let you leave).”
“You have taken care of my daughter since she was born until she started primary school this year. Thank you for treating my child like your own child. Thank you for raising us to become chubby in the past 6 years and cooking us a lot of delicious food.”
In the videos she shared, the whole family, the grandmother, Mengli and the children could be seen crying their hearts out as they all gave the domestic helper long bear hugs. Even the domestic helper was wiping away tears.
Considering that the domestic helper was, by chance, leaving their home on Mengli’s birthday, she also jokingly added, “Finally, thank you for choosing to leave us on my birthday.”
In the end, she gave all 3 children kisses to their cheeks and foreheads before walking out the door.
While it is truly saddening to let the domestic helper, who have grown into a member of the family, go, they believe it was time to let her spread her wings.
