A man and his family crossing the ocean to ask for his girlfriend’s hand in marriage
In the video, the family can be seen gathering at a jetty in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah as part of the man’s ‘rombongan meminang‘, the tradition in which a man’s family would bring gifts to a woman’s family home to ask for her hand in marriage.
Essentially taking over the jetty, the family then brought all the ‘dulang hantaran’, literally translated as trays of gifts on several boats to cross the sea over to Pulau Gaya where the woman’s family home is located.
Arriving in Pulau Gaya, the family then walked through the wooden floating houses to the woman’s family home where her family had been waiting.
It was then revealed that the woman and her family accepted the marriage proposal, with the future mother-in-law symbolically putting a ring on the woman’s finger at the end of the video. Aww!
