In Malaysia, we’d often see our members of parliament officiate and be present at certain events and big milestones within the community. However, we’re all very well aware that certain MPs appear to spend more of their time at random events.

Recently, PAS MP for Besut, Datuk Che Mohamad Zulkifly Jusoh was spotted ‘officiating’ a brand new ATM inside of a petrol station somewhere in Hulu Besut, Terengganu.

In several pictures which have made their way on social media, he could be seen posing for pictures and cutting the ribbon which was tied to the ATM.

Something out of the ordinary

The pictures have since gone viral on social media and captured the attention of netizens who were quick to ridicule the MP for having to ‘officiate’ an ATM.

“First time I’m seeing an ATM at a petrol station having a ceremony. Are we in 2023 or the 90s???”

“Complete with a ribbon cutting ceremony. I pity the people of Besut, and the people of Terengganu,” said a user.

Meanwhile, some users made jokes about how MPs now have to fill up their time with other events since there are a lack of wedding invitations due to Ramadan.

On the other hand, a few netizens defended the ceremony and said that it’s a big deal for the residents there as they’d normally have to commute for a long time just to get to an ATM.

“It’s quite rural and far from the nearest town so I understand why they had a ceremony just for installing the ATM.”

“If you live with privilege don’t think that everyone is the same. It’s a huge convenience to have an ATM especially in the villages,” said another user.
