A restaurant in Melaka city has been ordered to shut down by the Melaka Historic City Council (MBMB) for seven days after it was found keeping alpacas and 22 other animals on the premises, which violated business regulations.

The eatery was fined RM10,000 under the Entertainment and Places of Entertainment Enactment 2001 and RM250 under the MBMB Food Establishment By-laws 2020 for having animals at a food outlet.

The owner claimed that the alpacas were well cared for

According to China Press, the restaurant had alpacas, sheep, ducks, geese, rabbits, and even cats on display. Authorities have since ordered it to close until 28 September for a full cleanup and removal of the animals.

It was reported that the owner started bringing in the animals in phases since June, despite the restaurant’s licence clearly stating that no pets were allowed on the premises.

The Singaporean owner, who describes himself as an animal lover, insisted the alpacas were well cared for. He said the animals were imported from Australia at RM43,000 a pair, with only the male shown at the restaurant, while the females are kept at his home.

“It was still not right for the animals”

Melaka Deputy Exco for Science, Technology, Innovation and Digital Communication, Datuk Mohd Noor Helmy, shared on Facebook that while the shop’s concept is unique, it still disrupts the animals’ well-being.

“The idea is interesting, but it’s wrong because it doesn’t follow local council rules. Pity the animals, they don’t even get their own ‘me-time,'” he wrote.

He added that the Veterinary Department would begin its investigation today (22 September).

“The shop has been ordered to close for seven days for cleaning. After that, they must follow the guidelines, ensure the animals’ welfare, and only then can they resume business.”
