Just as Malaysians across the nation have strapped on their face masks and started practising obsessive cleaning and hygiene habits to keep the Wuhan novel coronavirus at bay, some people simply don’t seem to be at all worried, given how bizarre this story from Sin Chew Daily and China Press proves to be! In a twisted discovery made by Penang customs officials, a Myanmar national was found to have been smuggling something completely unthinkable.

What is that, you ask? He was smuggling 780 grams of dried rat meat. Yes, amid the Wuhan coronavirus outbreak, this man was trying to smuggle dried rat meat into Malaysia.

Arrested at the Penang International Airport by a member of the customs department, the man was found to not be in possession of an import permit or any relevant health documentations.

In addition to rat jerky, the customs department also confiscated over 59.8 kgs of mangoes that were being smuggled in by Thai nationals, with an estimated market value of RM 2,565. Again, the mangoes did not have the relevant documents for import or export.

As a result, all individuals that were detained will be investigated and charged under Section 11 (1) and Section 11 (3) of the Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Act 2011. If convicted, they may be fined for up to RM 100,000 or/and be imprisoned for up to six years.

Honestly you guys, we’ve heard of all sorts of weird and bizarre foods, but dried rat meat is definitely NOT on our list of things to try! Especially with all this going on with the Wuhan novel coronavirus!
