Well, this is awkward.
We’re sure many of you heard the shocking news about a 24-year-old man allegedly assaulting a couple in Rome in front of a local mosque. Malaysians were outraged to find out that their fellow countryman could be capable of such insensitive behaviour. However, it appears that the story wasn’t entirely true!
The incident in question first transpired when the man, who was believed to be Malaysian, spotted a couple holding hands and kissing in front of a mosque.
Feeling insulted by their public display of affection, he then reportedly told the couple, “You cannot kiss in front of the mosque”. He then proceeded to push the woman and kicked her male partner!
Unfortunately, the man didn’t stop there and continued to attack police officers as soon as they arrived at the scene, according to ANSA.
However, it has now been revealed that the man who reportedly committed the assault isn’t actually a Malaysian! Italian authorities have recently confirmed with the Malaysian embassy in Rome that the man is in fact from Mali. Yikes!
“We received the confirmation on Wednesday morning (Italian time),” a Malaysian embassy official in Rome told The Star.
Well, now that the matter has been cleared up, let’s hope the authorities take appropriate action. Regardless of his nationality, what the man did was undoubtedly wrong and we hope he learnt his lesson!
