Two sisters went through a terrifying ordeal when they were chased by an unidentified man armed with a knife at a shopping mall in Melaka on Saturday (7 February).

In the incident, which occurred at around 9:30 PM, the 21-year-old victim, a university student, and her 19-year-old younger sister were reportedly scolded and yelled at by the 50-year-old suspect for no apparent reason while they were in the parking area.

Melaka Tengah District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Christopher Patit, said initial investigations found that the suspect suddenly approached the victims while holding a knife, causing both of them to feel frightened.

“The suspect is believed to have scolded and shouted at the victim and her sister before chasing them,” he said in a statement.

“As a result, the victim and her sister ran into the shopping mall to save themselves,” he added.

However, the suspect fell during the incident and failed to continue chasing the victims into the shopping mall.

“No injuries were sustained by the victim or her sister. A police report was lodged for personal safety and due to concerns that an untoward incident might occur in the future,” he said.

Suspect arrested

He said the investigation led to the arrest of the suspect, and police also seized a knife, a shirt and a pair of trousers to assist with the investigation.

“The suspect is believed to have acted in such a manner because he thought the victim was a Vietnamese woman who had allegedly scammed him, causing him to suffer losses of about RM10,000,” he said.

Urine screening test results showed that the suspect tested positive for methamphetamine, and he has been remanded for four days to assist with the investigation.

He added that the case is being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation.

He also said that police would obtain closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage from the parking area and the entrance of the shopping mall to track the suspect’s movements.
