The Consumers Association of Penang (CAP) is encouraging the public to change our habit of throwing away food waste to turn it into edible food.
Through kicking the habit of wasting food, we can help reduce the percentage of food waste that is thrown away.
According to a report by Harian Metro, CAP Education Officer NV Subbarow shared that based on the Malaysian Solid Waste Management and Public Cleaning Corporation (SWCorp), 4,081 tons of edible food was thrown away by Malaysians in 2021 alone.
The report explained that 24% of food waste consists of vegetables and meat that can still be eaten.
“The amount of food waste in Malaysia is enough to feed 12 million people 3 times a day.”
“This shows that Malaysians are used to throwing away food without thinking twice and it is a bad habit,” he said.
The inspiration to convert food waste into edible food is an alternative way to stop this bad habit. For example, leftover rice can be converted to fried rice, excess bread can be made into pudding.
“Leftover food such as rice, bread and noodles can be turned into simple but suitable food. Malaysians need to start adopting a zero-waste lifestyle and learn to value food in addition to controlling themselves from buying more that they can eat,” he added.
Knowing how many people in Malaysia have to go to bed hungry at night, we should learn to appreciate the food that we have by ensuring none goes to waste.
