Sometimes, people tend to ridicule us for pursuing the things we love. Perhaps, in their eyes, our dreams are merely a child’s fantasy.

However, other people’s views and opinions should not hinder us from actually achieving our goals. Just like this Malaysian-born model, Atikah Karim.

In an interview with The Sun, Atikah shared some of her experiences in pursuing her aspiration. The beautiful lady had always wanted to become a model since her younger days.

She told the daily,

“I remember looking at photos of models in fashion magazines and getting all inspired back then when I was still in primary school. I wanted so badly to be just like them.”

Before breaking out in the international scene, Atikah has been modeling locally for quite a while. It was tough too because Malaysia isn’t exactly the easiest place to start out in the industry.

What helped propel her into worldwide recognition was winning the Ford Models Supermodel of the World Malaysia.

After that, the 23-year-old beauty moved to New York and has worked with big names such as Ralph Lauren, Banana Republic, Costume National, Libertine and more.

“I have been waiting patiently for my time to come and I am truly blessed that it is finally here.”

Of course, that doesn’t mean she did not miss home though.

“I love it here (in New York), but I get homesick all the time. Whenever I’m home, I’ll try to spend as much time as I can with my family and friends.”

But, moving to the Big Apple was the best for her career because Malaysian’s fashion industry is still far from catching up with the world’s standards.

Although she is very well-known internationally, the Bajau-Bruneian woman remained humble. She knew that just because she had fame did not necessarily mean she would get any job she wanted.

“It is not that easy. Even if I get booked for a big job, there is no guarantee. The booking agent might cancel on me the day before or even on the day when the job is supposed to take place.”

“That’s just how it works. So far, I have never experienced that. Some big brands have shown interest in quite a number of occasions but unfortunately, they passed.”

“I can’t let that affect me so I just move on to the next one.”

Atikah truly believes that staying true to herself, being humble and having patience is key to success.

What a great example! In whatever dreams we may choose to pursue, we should never give up so easily nor be discouraged by others.
