This year’s Olympics is anticipating a big number of Muslim travellers in attendance for its one of a kind event. Thanks to relaxed visa rules, a rush of Muslim travellers are expected to attend Japan’s biggest sporting event, which begins this late July and runs all the way to September.

According to a report published by Channel News Asia (CNA), Japan is estimating around 40 million travellers – and 8 million are expected to be Muslim tourists. This is a goldmine for Malaysia’s local halal meal providing companies. “MyChef”, a small local based company, is set to prepare ready-to-eat halal meals and snacks for the Olympics. Muslim attendees for the upcoming Olympics may enjoy a variety of halal meals ranging from fried rice to chicken briyani, thanks to offerings from this Malaysian company!

“It’s a huge platform and opportunity for us,” says Ahmad Husaini Hassan, the CEO of MyChef. According to CNA, Malaysia is the only country that has successfully reached a halal cooperation deal with Tokyo for the upcoming Olympics! This is a major breakthrough for Malaysia because Malaysia’s halal trade recently experienced a fall in exports to other non-Muslim nations such as the United States and China.

This one-of-a kind cooperation deal is also a platform for Malaysia to boost its halal exports. The Malaysian Government is expecting to sell foods worth 300 million USD through the “Malaysia Street 2020” promotion. Local halal food companies can also seize this opportunity to meet Japanese buyers and distributors. This first of its kind deal highlights the confidence of the Tokyo Organizing Committees towards Malaysia and our halal products.

Malaysia is truly in a unique position because our nation is the one and only nation that’s pioneering the halal food trade in the coming Olympics!
