Malaysia was dubbed the fattest country in Asia last year and an unfortunate as that is, we can’t say we didn’t see it coming. I mean, just visit your nearest mamak and take a look at all the scrumptious food available there. How can we no be fat lah?

On a serious note though, Malaysians definitely got an eating problem and are not getting the proper nutrients in our diet. That’s why we got into contact with a local doctor to ask for his insights on the matter.

1. Everyday nasi lemak and bubble tea, confirm unhealthy lah

Khiddir Nasharuddin, a medical practitioner based in Kuala Selangor shared with us that he has an increased amount of obesity-related cases recently. When asked what’s the primary cause of this, Dr Khiddir replied,

“This can be traced back to the unhealthy lifestyle choices that we Malaysians make daily. ”

These lifestyle choices include an unhealthy diet as well as a lack of physical activities and Dr Khiddir gave the recent bubble tea craze as a prime example of Malaysians not prioritizing a balanced diet.

A bubble tea serving has an average of 20 teaspoons of sugar, which is just too much for just ONE drink. Yikes!

Nasi lemak

Our national dish famous the world over and eaten literally any time of the day, a 100g serving of nasi lemak amounts to:

  • Calories: 585
  • Fat: 22g
  • Carbs: 82g
  • Protein: 16g
  • Vitamin C: 0%

ANDD that’s only in 100g! a normal serving normally have up to 800 calories weh! Besides that, Dr Khiddir also points out that the lack of vegetables in nasi lemak makes it lack in fibre as the few slices of cucumber doesn’t provide much (and let’s be honest here, no one actually eats those cucumbers anyway).

Roti Canai

Whether you like it banjir or asing, one thing’s for certain; roti canai is a super oily food! Dr Khiddir explains that roti canai being prepared with oil and butter is what makes the calories count rise up like the roti dough. Check this out:

  • Calories: 318
  • Fat: 10.81g
  • Carbs: 47.83g
  • Protein: 6.64g
  • Vitamin C: 0%

Do note that the 318 calories above are BEFORE dipping it into your favourite curry or dhal. Woah, didn’t know it could be so high in calories!

Dr Khiddir further stresses,

“The high amount of calories is one thing, but what’s worrisome actually is the lack of nutrients in a typical Malaysian diet.”

2. So what do we actually need in our diet?

So what does a balanced diet looks like? According to Dr Khiddir, it should be something like this:

“It is recommended to have a diet that is high in fruit, vegetables and whole grains.”

Unfortunately, this is the area where we Malaysians falter the most. One reason for this is that we lack the proper knowledge of the actual nutrients we need. Dr Khiddir associates this with the lack of proper information conveyed to the masses.

The absence of necessary nutrients could lead to serious illness which is why it’s recommended to take dietary supplements to complement our diet when a deficiency is recognized. With heart disease being the number one killer in Malaysia, it’s important for us to add nutrients that fight against the illness.

One such nutrient is Omega-3 fatty acids which are found in fish oil. Dr Khiddir concurs with this and explains its health benefits:

“Omega-3 fatty acids can reduce the level triglycerides, a type of blood fat and also lower the risk of abnormal heart rhythms.  Furthermore, it can even delay the build-up of plaque inside blood vessels.”

That’s why even the American Heart Association recommends the intake of fish that is rich with Omega-3 fatty acids at 2 times a week.

Well, one way to complement our diet with Omega-3 fatty acids nutrients is through fish oil capsule supplements such as the one by Naturalle!

  • 50% smaller in size than regular fish oil supplements but provide the same amount of heart-healthy Omega-3s for easier swallowing.
  • Consists of 36% EPA & 24% DHA (EPA 180mg, DHA 120mg)
  • Same strength but double the concentration of Omega-3 in comparison to its previous iteration, the Naturalle Fish Oil 1000mg!

  • Purity – Molecular distillation for concentrated purity
  • Economical and affordable family pack
