The death of an autistic boy last December, Zayn Rayyan shocked the nation, and today, the boy’s parents were charged in the Sessions Court for negligence which potentially caused physical injury to the child.
The parents, Zaim Ikhwan Zahari and Ismanira Abdul Manaf, who are both 29 years old pleaded NOT guilty to the charges, and both will seek trial for the matter, reported BERNAMA.
The charges were made under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, read together with Section 34 of the same Act. If found guilty, both faced a fine of up to RM50,000 or imprisonment of up to 20 years, or both.
The grandparents of Zayn Rayyan were also detained by the police yesterday (June 12) and were brought to court this morning. The grandparents, however, have been released on bail today.
They were detained to assist in the investigation under Section 302 of the Penal Code.
In case you missed it, Zayn Rayyan was reported missing in December last year. The next day, the boy’s corpse was found 200 meters away from his apartment block in Damansara Damai. According to the post-mortem, the cause of death was believed to be caused by strangulation and suffered injuries to his neck and body after trying to defend himself.
