Another iconic figure has left us. Just today (September 15), it was announced that Former MIC president Tun S. Samy Vellu has passed away at the age of 86.
His death was announced by Datuk Seri Dr S Subramaniam on a Facebook post, who was also a former MIC president.
“It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I received the tragic news of the demise of Tun Samy Vellu.”
Subramaniam also noted that to many people, the late Samy Vellu was the ultimate mentor, and his endless contributions will never be forgotten.
“His contribution to the nation and to the Indian Community will be permanently etched in our memories.”
Samy Vellu was the Sungai Siput MP from 1974 to 2008 and served as the work Minister from 1983 to 1989, and again from 1995 to 2008.
He was the longest-serving MIC president after holding the position for 31 years from 1979. He also had a history of 29 years in the Cabinet, making him one of the longest-serving ministers prior to his retirement.
