The decision to abolish free tolls during festive seasons has NOT been finalised yet.
On Tuesday (January 21), the Minister of Works, Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi announced the end of free tolls during the festive season, including the upcoming Chinese New Year which is expected to fall on January 29.
The Minister of Communications, Fahmi Fadzil, however, said that the government has not decided on anything yet.
“The announcement made by Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi was based on policy decisions made previously.”
A decision will be made on Friday
In a press conference yesterday (January 22), Fahmi said that the matter will be discussed and only decided at the Cabinet Meeting this Friday (January 24). He added that the government is open to receiving views from various parties and was prepared to study them.
“We respect the agreement that has been signed but at the same time we are studying what we can do to help the people.”
Fahmi said that the government is waiting for Anwar Ibrahim’s return from Switzerland, where he is attending the World Economic Forum.
Earlier, Alexander announced that the decision to abolish free tolls during the festive seasons was made last year and added that it is in line with the unity government’s policy to end blanket subsidies.
Alexander also said the government would implement a targeted approach for this matter but did not disclose the plan in detail.
