Free toll during the festive season is now officially a thing of the past as the government has just announced that Malaysian road users will no longer enjoy free tolls during holiday seasons.
This includes the upcoming Chinese New Year, which is expected to fall on January 29, 2025.
The matter was confirmed by the Works Minister himself, Dato Alexander Nanta Linggi, who said that these toll exemptions would be replaced with a “more targeted approach.” However, he did not disclose in detail about the approach but hinted that it would be announced in the near future.
The Works Minister also said that this decision was not made recently, but it had been decided since last year, reported Kosmo.
“We had decided on abolishing toll exemptions during festive seasons at a Cabinet meeting last year.”
“The decision is aligned with our efforts to implement targeted subsidies. The details will be announced soon,” he said when met by reporters after officiating the opening of Section 2 of the West Coast Expressway (WCE) here today (January 21).
Christmas 2024 was the last festive season in Malaysia when road users in the country could enjoy the toll fare exemption.
Meanwhile, Alexander said, it is estimated that 150,000 users per day will use WCE to travel from the West Coast of Selangor to Perak and onwards to the North.
