The DC movie, Joker which was released back in 2019 received critical acclaim, particularly on the plot’s direction and the brilliant performance of Joaquin Phoenix as the titular character.
The trailer for the sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux was recently released and if you have caught up with it, you may notice how the trailer teases a major jukebox musical. Other than that, Lady’s Gaga participation in the sequel as Harley Quinn, Joker’s lover in the comic books is also widely talked about.
During its production, Joker 2 was said to be a musical – a far cry from the original film’s psychological genre. The theory about the sequel being a musical was even “stronger” when director Todd Philips hinted that a whopping 15 cover songs (at least) and other original songs would be featured in the sequel.
The million-dollar question remains the same. Is the Batman-villain-centric movie a musical film? The short answer is no.
“It’s not a musical, but…”
Todd Philips, who recently appeared at CinemaCon in Las Vegas shut down the theory about Folie a Deux being a musical. However, Todd did not deny the heavy influence and features of the music in the movie.
Despite the musical elements, Todd assured the fans that Folie a Deux will NOT veer too far away from the original film.
“We never really talked about it like that, but I like to say it’s a film where music is an essential element. To me, that doesn’t veer too far from the first film.”
Based on the trailer, Joker and Harley Quinn are seen dancing around to music, and if you remember, Joker danced in the 1st film too, especially during the iconic stairs scene. According to Todd, that shows the “music” in Joker.
“It’s different, but I think it’ll make sense when you see it.”
Todd Philips is also known for his directorial work in The Hangover trilogy.
Folie a Deux is scheduled for a worldwide release on October 4, 2024, and will center around the meeting between Joker and Harley Quinn in the psychiatric ward. You can watch the trailer below.
We wouldn’t want to know TOO MUCH about the film before it’s released, anyway. Regardless of the elements in the film or the twists that the movie might have, we shall wait and see. If you’re eager to know about the featured songs, here’s where you can learn more.
On the other hand, the DC movie universe is expected to reset when Superman: Legacy flies to theatres in July 2025. The previous universe, also known as the DCEU ended with Aquman: The Lost Kingdom. Joker: Folie a Deux, however, is not part of the new universe and will stay under “Elseworlds”, where the story takes place outside the main universe.
