A fake scholarship offer agent is threatening a 19-year-old shop assistant to spread a nude video she took if she does not deposit RM1,000 into a man’s bank account.
This comes after she had applied for a scholarship through the scammer, in which she requested the victim to send her the nude video as part of the application process.
Based on a report by Harian Metro, the Batu Pahat District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Ismail Dollah shared that the victim had met a woman through Telegram, who offered scholarships to the victim to further her studies.
The Police Chief explained that, as a condition of the application, the victim had to send documents and also needed to do a health and physical examination online.
“The victim also needed to upload pictures of themselves, clothed and unclothed, and videos in a naked state. After that, the victim was asked to deposit RM600 into an account as loan processing money and the victim complied with all the instructions”, he said.
She then received a call from a man who threatened to spread the nude video if she did not deposit RM1,000 into a given bank account.
The victim realised she had been cheated and made a police report at the Batu Pahat District Police Headquarters (IPD) and a 30-year-old man has been arrested for further investigation.
“A mobile phone and an ATM card were seized. The police are also confident that they have successfully solved 2 extortion cases by arresting suspects who used the same modus operandi”, he added.
The police are making a remand application for the suspects to further assist in the investigations, which are being carried out in accordance with Section 384 of the Penal Code.
