The Johor State Government has announced that it will be establishing a rehabilitation to guide individuals deemed deviant to Islamic teachings and members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community back into “the right path”.

The first rehabilitation centre of its kind in Malaysia, this was revealed by Johor State Islamic Religious Affairs Committee chairman Mohd Fared Mohd Khalid at the Johor Legislative Assembly yesterday (29 November).

Taking to his official Facebook page, Mohd Fared further elaborated on the Islamic rehab centre, saying that it is expected to be operational in July next year and cost the state government RM400,000.

Mohd Fared, who is also the assemblyperson for Semerah, asserted,

“This rehabilitation centre is a grave necessity in this day and age as we face challenges in the forms of ideologies and teachings that deviate from Islamic teaching that is syumul (all-encompassing).”

“In fact, the centre will also rehabilitate the LGBT community. We have a massive role and responsibility to guide our friends who may have lost their way.”
