At Friday’s Ali Day, Alibaba founder Jack Ma urged his employees to engage in sexual activity six times a week. That’s a lot of sex.
The follower of the ‘work hard, play hard’ motto managed to creep out more than one hundred newlyweds and their spouses attending Alibaba’s 15th annual “Ali Day” on Friday (10 May).
Ma got into trouble back in April for condemning an online movement against the 996 working schedule, where employees are “encouraged” to work 9 am to 9 pm, six days a week (hence 996).
Not wanting to shy away from his support of the 996 working culture, he wanted to apply the 996 spirit to sexual activity as well — hence, 669.
“We emphasized the spirit of 996 at work, we want 669 in life. What is 669? Six days, six times, with longer being the key.”
The Chinese word for “long” is a homophone for the word for “nine”, flipping the notorious 996, to 669, it now encourages long, daily sexual activity. Um, OK, boss.
China’s richest man did not stop there. Proud of his double entendre, he posted the quote on Alibaba’s official Weibo account. Is this the biggest dad joke in modern history?
According to Shanghaist, Ma’s message echoes the intention of the Chinese government to increase the nation’s birth rate. Ever since the one-child policy was lifted due to an impending demographic crisis, birth rates have yet to rise.
His message, however, did not go down well with netizens.
One Chinese netizen said that “996” and “669” don’t seem terribly compatible.
“Get off work at 9 pm. Arrive at home at 10.30 pm. Who has the energy?”
On Technode, one netizen commented, “If an ordinary person said this, it would be considered as part of the ‘straight man cancer’.”
‘Straight man cancer’ is a Chinese term used to describe men who are self-righteous and indifferent to the value of and the obstacles faced by women.
Another netizen warns of health complications that could arise should anyone follow the 996 and 669 lifestyle.
“996 during the day, 669 during the night, I guess in less than a month I might have to stay in the ICU forever.”
The 996 lifestyle has recently stirred much controversy, with it’s punishing work schedule often without proper compensation.
We can only hope and pray that employers in Malaysia are not as crazy to suggest such ghastly working hours or even attempt to dictate our sex lives just for the sake of productivity.
