Although she did not hold her wedding at a luxury hotel, a Malaysian woman noted that the setting was by no means cheap.

Having recently tied the knot, the bride expressed her shock after a colleague who attended the ceremony gave an Ang Pow (red packet) containing significantly less than expected. She highlighted that, despite the venue choice, the cost per guest was at least RM300 to RM400.

An unexpected discovery

The woman was baffled to learn the exact amount she had received from her colleague.

“I never really expected to break even, but that was far too little,” she remarked.

In a viral Facebook post by 李大叔, the woman explained that after returning home, she discovered the colleague, who had brought three family members along, had given only RM80. She even paused for a moment, wondering if she had somehow overlooked other packets.

“But I was right. From a family of four, whom I expected to give at least RM1,200, I received only RM80,” she said.

“We talked a lot in the office, and she seemed so excited to attend. It feels as though I forked out over RM1,000 just to treat them to dinner.”

Mixed emotions

The bride admitted to having mixed feelings, noting that while she wasn’t necessarily angry, she was at a loss for how to react. She clarified that while she never expected guests to bring a strictly fixed amount, RM80 for four people was difficult to accept.

Now that the wedding is over, the newlywed faces a fresh dilemma. She admitted that following the shock of the gift, she finds it difficult to face her colleague at work, especially given their previous rapport.

Reflecting on the situation, she noted she could have accepted the amount if the colleague had attended alone.

“I feel awkward whenever I see her. Do I pretend nothing happened? This wedding has truly revealed who my real friends are,” she lamented.

What do you think about the woman’s story? Should the colleague have forked out more money, or should she give the amount she’s comfortable with?
