We’re sure by now you would have heard about the infamous Balenciaga tote that bears a remarkable resemblance to another iconic tote. But there is one huge difference about it, which is the price tag.
Balenciaga’s Arena Extra-Large Shopper Tote Bag retails for a whopping $2,145 (RM9,455), while Ikea’s signature Frakta only costs RM2!
Why such a big price difference?!
Well, it’s because the Arena is made of blue wrinkled, glazed leather but the Ikea Frakta is made of recyclable polypropylene, which explains why it’s so much cheaper.
Thrilled that the luxury brand has imitated their design, Ikea has said that they are “deeply flattered” that their cheap tote has inspired Balenciaga.
But that’s not all, in response to the bag, they recently took to their Facebook page and posted a playful jibe at the fashion powerhouse.
The post reads, “Get the big blue bag that started it all at a price that’s 4000 times more affordable. Visit our stores to check out this and other authentic IKEA designs that are all the rage this season.” Way to go, Ikea!
Not only that, the popular furniture retailer also posted several photos of their iconic bag, where the model in the pictures poses similarly to Balenciaga’s model.
In the post, the captions for each photo are “Unlimited edition”, “Authentic yellow-stamped logo”, and “Genuine recyclable plastic.”
The post which was uploaded a few days ago quickly caught netizens’ attention where it has garnered over 1,200 shares and over 3,700 reactions.
Whoever is in charge of Ikea’s social media, you’ve got our thumbs up on your sense of humour!
