Many migrant workers come to work in the Southeast Asian region to earn money to support their families back home.
Recently, a heartwarming story of a migrant Bangladeshi worker was highlighted by a Singaporean MP in their March parliamentary session. The MP, Louis Ng, asked migrant workers to be treated fairly by bringing up Mazibur’s story.
“Mazibur is our cleaner in Nee Soon East. I’ve known him for 8 years. He came to Singapore in 2012, leaving his daughter Jannat when she was only 22 days old.”
He continued, “Mazibur has not returned to Bangladesh since. Jannat will turn 12 years old this year. He has missed all her birthdays and milestones growing up.”
In addition, Louis recalled meeting Jannat during a lunch they organised in Bangladesh to meet all the cleaners’ families.
“It is sad that I got to meet Mazibur’s daughter before he did. Jannat wrote to me and what she wrote tore through my heart. She said, ‘Take care of my father, I love my father a lot’. I promised her I would.”
On May 19, the MP revealed in a Facebook post that the family was finally reunited after 12 long years.
“So glad to welcome his family to Singapore and so glad that he finally finally got to meet his daughter Jannat.”
He also thanked Mazibur and the rest of the cleaners for keeping Singapore clean.
This is certainly a very heartwarming story, and we hope that Mazibur will have fun bringing his family around and spending quality time together.
