After Brunei’s withdrawal, Malaysia was granted the right to host the 2027 SEA Games, as decided in a meeting with the SEA Games Federation (SEAGF) Council Members, as reported by BERNAMA.
The Minister of Youth & Sports, Hannah Yeoh, recently revealed the cost of hosting the 2027 SEA Games for Malaysia.
“I estimated a cost of more than RM700 million for us to host the event,” Hannah said after a ceremony at the Menara KBS yesterday (May 31).
The RM700 million figure is based on the expenses of the 2017 SEA Games, but the cost for 2027 is expected to go up, based on a report by Astro Arena.
Hannah also said that only Sarawak has expressed interest in hosting the 2027 SEA Games. The current plan is to hold engagement sessions next week on June 6 to find other interested parties who will co-host the sports event and discuss the financial impact.
“I will bring the feedback to the Cabinet before we make any decision to proceed with it or not.”
The minister also explained that Sarawak is confident about hosting the 2027 SEA Games because the state has been appointed to host The Malaysia Games (SUKMA) this year, which will take place from August 17 to 24 and will feature 37 sports with 488 events contested, according to Borneo Post Online.
“They are confident that they have complete infrastructures but we have to be fair to other states and talk to them first.”
