Former Housing and Local Government (KPKT) Minister Datuk Zuraida Kamaruddin in a statement yesterday said that if given the chance, she wants to visit Afghanistan to guide its new Taliban government on women’s rights and empowerment. As reported by Malay Mail, Zuraida commented that the recent Taliban takeover of the Middle Eastern country has undeniably led to hostility towards progress and women’s rights there which should be rectified by other Muslim countries sending missions to educate the Taliban on women’s empowerment.

Zuraida, who is also the Member of Parliament (MP) for Ampang further stressed that progressive Muslim countries around the globe should send representatives among their female leaders to Afghanistan to help with the country’s empowerment agenda. In fact, if the opportunity arises, she herself would like to be in Afghanistan to guide the government and its people in empowering women.

Furthermore, the former KPKT Minister also claimed that Malaysia being a modern and progressive Muslim country would definitely have a lot of things to share with the newly formed Taliban government in Afghanistan. Zuraida asserted,

“As a modernising Islamic country, there are many things we can share with them, especially on how to optimize the role of women in administration, politics, education, economics and social, which are in line with the true teachings of Islam,”

In the statement, Zuraida also admitted that it would be a very difficult and challenging mission but it is the obligation of Muslims to try and ensure there would be acceptable pathways for Afghani women and girls, given the horrendous track record that the previous Taliban government had in women’s rights.
