Oh, dear!!

The Star reported that flood in Sarawak has gotten even worse as it reached the five-foot (approximately 1.7m) mark in the Baram district (interior), Northern Sarawak. What’s even more worrying is that the water levels are on the rise and it looks like they’re not slowing down anytime soon. The flood got so bad that it nearly swallowed the Rumah Beruang longhouse in Long Beruang as it is nearly 1.7m in water.

Today (12th December 2019), the Miri Fire and Rescue Department listed the “area as among the worst hit by floods” in Sarawak. For now, the water has entered shophouses and residents are forced to move to higher grounds because the flood doesn’t seem to be receding. Some of the other places that are hit with the flood are:

  • Long Sipiling
  • Rivering settlements in the Tutoh Apoh river basin
  • The Marudi district. In pictures by Marudi Bomba, the district looked like “Venice of Interior Baram.”

FYI, this is the fourth day of Marudi being affected by the flood and it has badly affected social as well as economic activities. On that note, we hope that the floods will go down soon and the condition Sarawak will get better. In the meantime, Sarawakians please stay safe.
