Malaysia’s compliance rate towards the Movement Control Order (MCO) is highly encouraging as many people realise the importance of the restricted movement and are playing their part to curb the spread of Covid-19.
The government aspires to reach a 100% compliance rate and everyone is urged to follow the restriction movement order. However, sometimes there can be a few challenges that stand in the way of reaching that. One of the biggest challenges Malaysia is facing right now is the refusal of some people to adhere to the MCO.
In yet another case of non-compliance, five men in Sibu were arrested when they were found hiding and playing mahjong in a fellow gambler’s house.
According to Sin Chew Daily, not only were these five men found illegally gambling, but were also caught not wearing face masks while being in close proximity with each other.
Sibu OCPD Asst Comm Stanley Jonathan Ringgit stated that the police received reports about people gambling illegally at home on Monday (30 March). Following multiple reports, police forces were immediately sent out to arrest the gamblers on the spot.
The public is advised to practice social distancing when they are involved in a gathering (not that people should gather for the time being), however, these men were found sitting at close proximity without proper precautions taken such as wearing face masks and practicing a distance of one metre apart.
