When the festivities are near, we will definitely hear many people playing with firecrackers and fireworks even though it is illegal.

However, Local Government Development Minister Nga Kor Ming has said that the federal government has agreed to legalise firecrackers and fireworks!

Fireworks

The minister, who was at a festive event in Nilai on 2 February said that before this, the Chinese community’s practice of lighting firecrackers had brought upon illegal smugglers and sales, reported Oriental Daily.

So, legalising firecrackers and fireworks would mean that the revenue will increase along with more legislation to control the safety of firecrackers and fireworks.

“In the past, there were frequent accidents when setting off fireworks, but these were all caused by substandard products.”

He added that after legalisation, all imported fireworks and firecrackers will need to be reviewed and approved by law enforcement agencies before they can obtain a license so that the government can ensure the safety of a product.

Nga Kor Ming notes that fireworks and firecrackers are no longer just a practice in the Chinese community, it’s a widespread practice across the many races in Malaysia.

The minister also mentioned that this change in policy doesn’t mean that the government is encouraging people to light fireworks on a daily basis.

“This is an indication of how liberal the unity government is. Now, there is no need to worry about actions taken when you play with fireworks.”

While we’re certainly very happy about this legalisation, we can’t help but think about how our sleep will probably be disturbed.
