A user on X reported that Malaysia has been hit by a massive cyber attack, which is said to be spreading to various media outlets in several countries worldwide.
EPF, SPR and Malaysia Gazette were hacked
Decrypt reported that a bunch of X accounts worldwide, including some in Malaysia, got hacked and started sharing the same posts pushing the $HACKED Solana token.
Solana is a blockchain platform with its own cryptocurrency called SOL, designed to support decentralised applications (dApps) and facilitate transactions.
The caption of the post reads,
“This account has been hacked! We’re introducing $HACKED on Solana. For every account we breach, we’ll share the token address so we can pump it and profit together. Buy now!”
Several local X accounts, such as the Employees Provident Fund (EPF), the Election Commission of Malaysia (SPR), and even the Malaysia Gazette, were impacted.
“The most incompetent hack of the year”
Crypto investigator @zachxbt revealed that the hacked accounts were promoting a cryptocurrency with a meagre trading volume, resulting in the hackers earning only about $8,000 (approximately RM37,000).
The hackers attempted to promote a meme coin called HACKED, which Zachxbt described as “a strong contender for the most incompetent hacker of the year.”
Some speculate that the hack was primarily aimed at X accounts rather than targetting individual users or specific countries in a crypto token pump-and-dump scheme.
Fortunately, all the Malaysian accounts have now returned to normal. What are your thoughts on this? Let us know down in the comments below!
