Recently, an 11-year-old student died after being struck on the head by a goalpost whilst at school in Bintulu. The victim was pronounced dead by medical personnel at the Bintulu Hospital, and police declared it as a sudden death.

Following the freak accident, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek has ordered a check on all of its sporting facilities.

In a statement, Fadhlina said the incident saddened her and that the ministry would reach out to the victim’s family to offer assistance.

“To ensure the safety and well-being of students, the ministry will ensure that the state and district level education offices, as well as all schools, check all sports facilities and fields,” she wrote in a Facebook post.

“The sports equipment maintenance SOPs will be enhanced to ensure zero accidents.”

She added that school administrators must remind students to be extra vigilant during extracurricular activities and also said the ministry will cooperate with the police in its investigation into the incident.

We would like to offer our condolences to the victim’s family.
