In case you haven’t noticed, drug abuse in Malaysian youths are increasing at an alarming rate. FMT reports that within the first six months of this year, there had already been 1,256 students who were tested positive for drugs!

Apparently, a main factor for this increase is due to the cheap prices and accessibility of drugs nowadays, especially for crystal meth or syabu, according to FMT. When meth was first introduced, the minimum cost for one pack of it would be around RM50.

Now, there are even packs that cost RM10, which means these kids can share the cost of a pack of syabu.

What’s even more shocking is, drug dealers are now targeting school children to also act as the pushers in their schools because they say that students are “more honest” compared to adult dealers.

In addition, these juvenile pushers are willing to do so because they command a certain level of protection from getting bullied in their schools. If you are a dealer, then you will be automatically associated with the triad and nobody wants to mess with the kongsi gelap, right?

Selling to these underage kids are also more lucrative as these children already have ready pocket money from parents so the supply of meth is always be sold out.

So, why is meth suddenly so cheap compared to last time?

The answer is simple. Previously, Malaysia used to import meth from other countries but due to the ease of obtaining the ingredients and various instructions on how to open your own meth lab, business is booming. With just a few clicks, anyone can access videos on how to create your own meth.

About three to four years ago, 0.5g of costs RM250 but now the average price is only about RM100 to RM150. This amount of drugs is enough for a maximum of six persons.

Besides, these juvenile dealers are usually drug abusers themselves so they sell their stock to schoolchildren, knowing that they can turn a quick buck and use the profit to buy their next hit. These dealers also have a “drive-by” service where they will drop off the drugs in a flash in order to avoid getting caught.

Tam, an ex-drug user said, “We would inform the buyer about the car’s colour, the kind of drugs, the amount and other relevant info. After that, when we reached the drop off point, we would just wind down the windows, pick up the item and the deal is done.”

He also warned other curious teens who want to try taking meth and said, “Meth is becoming an even bigger problem than cancer as more and more people get addicted. You can’t just try it for fun because from the first hit you take, you will get addicted and it isn’t easy to quit. You will do all sorts of crazy things just to get money for your next high and it is never enough. Stay far away from drugs, kids.”

One very important thing to highlight though, since people can easily ‘cook up’ their own drugs at home, the quality of drugs are definitely going down the drain – you never know when you’d take one laced with rat poison and other harmful chemicals.

So, say no to drugs guys!
