It looks like our very own Prime Minister will be paying President Donald Trump a visit very soon!
According to The Star, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak will be meeting with the President of the United States, Donald Trump at the White House on 12th September.
The meeting was first reported by the Wall Street Journal, highlighting that our Prime Minister has been looking forward to emphasise his friendship with Trump, and it appears the feeling is mutual on the U.S. President’s end. A statement from the White House that announced the Prime Minister’s visit said,
“President Trump looks forward to celebrating the 60th anniversary of United States-Malaysia bilateral relations and discussing ways to strengthen and broaden our bilateral relationship and expand regional cooperation with one of America’s closest partners in Southeast Asia.”
The U.S. first recognised the Federation of Malaya on our independence day (31st August 1957), which was when diplomatic relations between the two nations was also established.
The United States reportedly sees Malaysia as an important partner in standing up to China’s extensive territorial claims in East Asia. Relations between the two nations had improved under President Barack Obama, who was the first U.S. president to visit Malaysia in 50 years.
We hope this visit goes smoothly on both ends. What do you think of this meeting? Let us know!
