With the coming of a new Yang di-Pertuan Agong comes the hope that there would be a public holiday in honour of His Highness’s accession to the throne.
Well, unfortunately, we’re going to have to burst that bubble.
According to a report by Harian Metro, the government will not grant a special public holiday in conjunction with the announcement of the new Yang di-Pertuan Agong on January 31 (Wednesday).
Minister of Communications, Fahmi Fadzil, shared that the matter was not discussed by the Cabinet last week.
“Unfortunately, today, there is no such announcement decided by the Cabinet unless the Prime Minister thinks it is appropriate. For your information, the next Cabinet meeting will be after the announcement of the appointment of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong,” he said.
He shared the news after false information had been spread on social media that January 31 (Wednesday) will be declared a public holiday in conjunction with the announcement of the appointment of the new Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
The 263rd (Special) Council of Rulers meeting took place at Istana Negara on October 27 and unanimously declared the Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar as the 17th Yang di-Pertuan Agong for a period of the next 5 years, as it has been practised so far.
