According to a report by China Press, a 41-year-old woman from Jiangsu, China, had to have her stomach, along with 5kg of food, removed to survive, after she had overeaten to a point where her stomach had expanded to an extreme extent.

She also suffered from multiple gastric wall necrosis and perforation, which led to septic shock and multiple organ failure.
The woman is accustomed to overeating
About a month ago, she allegedly felt abdominal bloating and discomfort, as well as her belly becoming bigger than before. Despite this, she didn’t adjust her eating habits and continued to overeat during the Chinese New Year celebrations.
She later displayed symptoms of abdominal distension and experienced severe vomiting.

Due to the intense pain, she was rushed to a hospital where she was transferred to the intensive care unit (ICU) as she had slipped into a coma. Doctors then found that her stomach was extremely dilated due to duodenal obstruction, with multiple gastric wall necrosis and perforation.
After having gotten her into surgery, doctors cleared out more than 3,000ml of stomach contents, including large amounts of pickles and bean sprouts weighing 5kg.
Following a night of emergency operations, she was saved.
The deputy director of the hospital has since urged the general public, especially the elderly, to maintain 3 regular meals a day with a balance of meat and vegetables.
They also advised eating less salt and oil, drinking alcohol in moderation, and avoiding large amounts of crude fibre and indigestible foods such as persimmons, pickles and bean sprouts, on an empty stomach and for several consecutive days.
