While our cuisine is uniquely Malaysian, there are many countries that have dishes that are similar to our own (variants, if you may). An example of this are the alternative kinds of ‘rotis‘ you would find in countries like Pakistan and Lebanon, as a variant to our roti canai or roti naan.

With that being said, it may be more common than we think to have foreigners confuse our dishes with something they’d find in their home country.

A Chinese student studying in Malaysia took to the social media platform, XiaoHongShu, to share how they were shocked to find curry-flavoured ‘dumplings’ here and that they had steamed them. (Spoiler alert: they were not dumplings, they were curry puffs.)

Curry Puff 1

The student wrote, “Malaysia has curry-flavoured dumplings. ‘Localised’ dumplings. I steamed a few and ate them. Let’s just say that the taste was okay, but the skin was very thick.”

Yeaps, the skin was thick because they were curry puffs, not dumplings. We wonder what puff pastry would taste like steamed.

Many people found the situation absolutely hilarious and took to the post to explain to the student what the food item actually is.

Perhaps now the student can fry the curry puffs and experience what it’s supposed to taste like!

You can check out the student’s post here.

Would you try steaming a curry puff? Do feel free to share your thoughts in the comment section.
