Chap Fan is also known as economy rice because it is meant to be the most affordable meal option at hawker centres. With that in mind, is this local favourite meal slowly losing its connection to its very name?

Netizen, Yoyo, took to their XiaoHongShu account to question whether paying RM20 is expensive for an economy rice meal after an eatery in Cheras had shocked them with the price.

They wrote, “It is my first time eating economy rice here and it’s over RM20. Did I pay too much or is this the normal price here?”

They also included an image of their economy rice meal to allow the general public to judge whether it is worth over RM20.

For their meal, they chose 2 vegetables in the form of lady’s fingers and cabbage, a meat dish, an egg and some plain curry.

While some netizens pointed out that the RM20 price on the meal is, indeed, expensive, one person shared that Yoyo should have refused the meal and walked away.

“You should have immediately refused and walked away. I did that once. I just said I couldn’t afford it and left. At that time, the shop owner was left dumbfounded.”

Do you think economy rice is becoming less economic? Do feel free to share your thoughts in the comment section.
