We all have seen it by now, the squirming faces of those who go to get themselves tested for Covid-19 by getting their nose and throat swabbed. Some of us might have the first-hand experience of the test and nine out of 10 will agree that it is a very uncomfortable procedure.

Well, if you think that is uncomfortable, imagine those who have to endure anal swabs to test for Covid-19 instead. While there’s no official announcement or policy in regards to the procedure, more than 1,700 individuals in Northern China have had to endure the procedure without prior notice.

Bloomberg reported that the method involves inserting the cotton swab about two to three centimetres into the anus and the sample retrieved will be tested for Covid-19. Just last week, about 1,000 students and teachers in Beijing were analysed (heh!) with the same procedure.

Li Tongzeng, deputy director of the respiratory and infectious disease department of Beijing You An Hospital explained that the new technique is based on research findings that the virus can last longer in the anus than the respiratory tract. He also mentioned that this procedure is a good way to test those who are asymptomatic.

So…which one do you prefer if you are given a choice? The uncomfortable throat and nose swab or the anal swab? Well, if you want to prevent yourself from experiencing both, then be a responsible citizen, stay home and follow all the necessary measures. We will win this war.
