Previously, retired Indonesian shuttler Taufik Hidayat had questioned Lee Chong Wei’s qualifications to be inducted into the Badminton World Federation’s Hall of Fame.

In response to that, our national badminton legend mentioned that he felt attacked and asked Taufik to direct the question to BWF.

In a statement on Facebook issued by BWF, they said that both Lin Dan and Lee Chong Wei are “worthy recipients.”

“The Council endorsed the nominations of Lin Dan and Lee Chong Wei for the Hall of Fame as per the selection criteria outlined in the awards regulations.”

BWF secretary-general Thomas Lund added,

“Both are worthy recipients of the accolade for their outstanding contributions to badminton beyond the confines of the court over a significant period of time.”

They ended the post by saying that they “recognise the achievements and contributions of many legends of the sport and look forward to inducting more champions into the BWF Hall of Fame in the coming years.”

It is unknown what the criteria are but we’re glad that BWF has stood up for Lee Chong Wei.

Lin Dan and Lee Chong Wei were both inducted into the Badminton World Federation’s Hall of Fame on 26 May.

Although he did not win any Olympic gold medals, Lee Chong Wei was world number one for 349 weeks, and won three silver Olympic medals, in Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Rio 2016, reported BERNAMA.
