Former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak managed to convey a letter addressed to the people of Malaysia after being sentenced for the offense of abusing his position to obtain bribes and laundering RM2.3 billion of 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) funds.

The letter was read by his lawyer, Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, during a press conference after the proceedings at the Palace of Justice yesterday (26 December).

Letter

In the letter, Najib stated that there were times when he felt as though the struggle had to be borne alone.

“Dear respected brothers and sisters, I write this with a calm mind, though my heart is heavy. There are times when I feel as though this struggle must be carried alone. However, I remain determined to continue—not out of vengeance, but out of principle.”

What I seek is only the rights provided by law and what has been granted. My intention has never changed, which is to contribute to the development of the nation and the well-being of the people,” he said.

According to the letter, Najib said the struggle was not an attempt to evade responsibility, but an effort to uphold justice, honor the integrity of the Constitution, and defend the sovereignty of the law implemented without fear or favour.

“I will continue to claim my rights through lawful channels with dignity and patience, even though the path is lonely and demands great sacrifice.”

“Whatever today’s decision may be, I still have faith in the country’s judicial process,” he added.

Urges the public to remain calm

In this regard, he urged Malaysians to remain calm, rational, and prudent, and not be influenced or involved in any provocation that could disrupt public harmony or insult the legal process.

“Differences of opinion should be expressed maturely, orderly, and based on the law.”

“I call upon all Malaysians to assess this matter calmly and rationally—not merely from the perspective of my fate as an individual, but for the future of national institutions and the principles we uphold together,” he said.
