Now, the one thing Malaysians love the most about the festive season may be the food but let’s be honest, ang paus are on everyone’s minds.

So much so that once the world became digitalised, people started posting the QR codes to their accounts online, hoping that their followers and friends would send them ang pau money.

One Malaysian, Naz KL Property Consultant, shared his unpopular opinion on how sharing your account details on social media to ask for ang paus is wrong.

Qr 1

He wrote, “Asking for duit Raya (ang paus) is actually a sin. Giving duit Raya is charity. Begging is forbidden by religion. Giving duit Raya to parents, relatives and close friends is one of the traditions that is often done by the Malay community, especially during Hari Raya.”

“Voluntarily giving is considered charity but it has become a trend in recent years where a few people have been deliberately asking for Raya money, not only from their own families but also from the public through social media. A survey done from the majority of social media found that there are netizens who are deliberately displaying bank account numbers of post account QR codes on their social media to ask for Raya money.”

Qr 2

He went on to explain that this is forbidden in the eyes of religion.

Do you agree with his unpopular opinion?
