Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari has announced that the Batang Kali-Genting Highlands road will be reopened either in the beginning or middle of January next year. The road, which is currently closed due to the recent landslide disaster in Batang Kali, Hulu Selangor will also be widened on the left or right side.

As reported by Bernama, Amirudin further elaborated that the matter was decided as a result of his meeting with the Selangor Public Works Department (PWD) on 23 December 2022. The reopening of the road is expected to help up to 5,000 residents in Batang Kali, Hulu Selangor to commute, especially for residents who are working in Genting Highlands, Pahang.

The Selangor Menteri Besar commented,

“We will widen the area on the left or right side of the Batang Kali-Genting Highlands road to allow the residents of Batang Kali to use the road, but only light vehicles can pass through it. The area has been embanked with stones and compacted; we will also arrange a security team to control the route,”

Besides that, Amirudin also announced that the Selangor State Government would be following in the Federal Government’s footsteps by not holding any 2023 New Year celebrations. This decision was made as a mark of respect to the victims involved in the landslide tragedy. However, the State Government will not stop other parties, such as private companies or residents’ clubs from holding such events, though they are advised to do so in moderation.
