Caretaker Menteri Besar (MB) of Perak, Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad has revealed that the state is expected to reach 80 per cent 5G network coverage by 2024. Moreover, Saarani said that the city of Ipoh is the first location to have 5G coverage in the state and it will soon be expanded to other districts such as Manjung, Kuala Kangsar and Taiping.

As reported by Bernama, the caretaker Perak MB lauded the speeds of the 5G coverage in Ipoh, saying that it exceeded 1Gbps. He further elaborated,

“So far 5G structures have been installed at 37 network sites around Ipoh and it is expected that 106 5G network sites will be built by the end of this year. In Ipoh city we have reached an average 5G speed of 620 megabytes per second and sometimes the network can reach more than 1 gigabyte per second,”

The 5G network sites were built under the federal government’s Jalinan Digital Negara (JENDELA) and the network is currently only accessible to end users of YTL Communications Sdn Bhd (YES). However, the 5G network in Perak and nationwide is expected to be expanded to other users of local telco companies soon following the signing of the Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) subscription agreement.

Saarani believes that the widespread 5G coverage can have a positive impact on economic growth apart from helping to make people in this state literate in IoT (Internet of Things) in line with the development of digital technology. The caretaker Perak MB yesterday (28 October 2022) witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) ceremony between Ipoh City Council (MBI) and YTL Communications Sdn Bhd on the implementation of the 5G network around Ipoh city at MBI.

The MoU was signed by Ipoh mayor Datuk Rumaizi Baharin who represented MBI while YTL was represented by its chief executive officer Lee Wing Kui. So, what do you guys think of the statement by Saarani? Share your thoughts with us in the comments!
