A while back, a schoolgirl in Sabah faced potential injuries when the rotting bridge she routinely took to school collapsed under her.

But what’s saddening is that she isn’t the only one risking their safety just to get an education.

Luqmanlong took to his Twitter account to showcase school kids having to use a pipeline as a bridge to dangerously cross a raging river, in their journey to get to class. Feel like you’ve heard about this before? Well, that’s because it was happening in the past and it’s still happening.

He wrote, “An incident at Kampung Mansiang Baru, Sabah. A river that is that rapid, even if you know how to swim, it is still dangerous.”

What makes this situation even more enraging is the fact that the state authorities received salary increments while such life threatening situations have not been resolved.

The Sabah Chief Minister’s salary has just gone up from RM23,585 to RM33,033 a month. But the children of Sabah have to climb the pipeline to cross the river. What is happening?” he further questioned.

Luqmanlong went on to showcase the salaries of the Sabah state government politicians, in which they had approved for themselves:

  • Chief Minister RM33,033
  • Deputy Chief Minister RM29,221.50
  • Minister RM22,869
  • Speaker RM22,869
  • Assistant Minister RM17,787
  • Deputy Speaker RM17,787
  • Assemblyman RM11,130
  • Political Sectretary RM7,623

Considering they are receiving such high salaries, shouldn’t they be putting themselves to good use by solving a problem that risks the lives of children?

“I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Don’t blame Sabahans who voted. They voted – the trust to look after the state is the work of the politicians. We have to show solidarity with them, including the school students in Sabah. Punish lazy politicians!” he added.
