Recently, there has been a host of issues concerning our public transportation system. In the past month, there have been several times when the LRT service faced disruptions.

Despite the disruptions, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob has just announced that for 30 days starting from 3pm today (June 16), everyone will be able to enjoy free rides across all public transportation services under RapidKL in the Klang Valley.

The initiative was done in conjunction with the launch of the first phase of the Putrajaya MRT, which also begins operations today.

Not the solution

Following the news, Malaysians have taken to social media to express their thoughts on the initiative by the Prime Minister.

It’s safe to say that most people believe there are better solutions to the woes of our public transportation system and that this might even bring about more harm than good.

One netizen pointed out that because public transportation is free for a time, those in charge will use it as an excuse not to attend to any complaints or problems.

Another user highlighted that the issue was never about the prices of tickets. “The issues that we as customers face are the frequencies of trains and the lack of maintenance.

“But he’s coming out with a solution to give free service? Do you even understand what the issue is about?”

“The problem is right now, the trains and facilities can’t cope with the public demand… if it is free, it’ll mean more people will take the train. The stations will be even more crowded,” said another user.

Netizens came up with creative solutions to solve the issues

Meanwhile, users even came up with innovative solutions to the problem.

“Instead of giving free rides for the rakyat, we would have been happier if he asked his team to use public transport for one month.”

Some users think the initiative is merely being introduced to ‘buy’ the peoples’ votes in the upcoming General Election.

Whatever the reasons might be, we definitely urge all Malaysians to take up this chance to fully utilize our public transportation systems!

What do you think of the initiative? Will it bring more harm than good? Let us know in the comments.
