As Asians, many of us are obsessed with having fair and radiant skin, because in ancient times, having fair skin meant that one was wealthy enough to hire labourers to go out in the scorching sun for you. And this culture still holds true until today, with the increasing popularity of whitening creams in the market.

While it is fine for those who wants to use whitening creams to brighten your complexion, you should always ensure that the ingredients they contain are safe for your skin, otherwise you may end up destroying not only your face but also your health.

Based on a recent report, Singapore has discovered that a certain facial cream that’s currently being sold on a few online platforms, contains a dangerously-high level of mercury – 3,600 times more than the permissible level in fact!

Malaysians should be wary too, as the same cream is also sold on several online platforms here.

It was discovered that the product known as Royal Expert Whitening Cream. After conducting several tests on samples obtained from a few online resellers, it was determined that all of the samples tested positive for containing high levels of mercury.

According to Malay Mail, HSA said, “Regular application of creams containing mercury could lead to rash, skin discolouration and blotching. Chronic exposure to high levels of mercury in cosmetic products may also affect the kidneys and nervous system as it can be absorbed through the skin.”

The product, which is said to have anti-ageing properties, apparently helps users beautify their skin by moisturising, reducing wrinkles and brightening the complexion.

Since the discovery of this forbidden element in the facial cream, HSA has ordered all online resellers in Singapore to take down its listings. Vendors who do not comply with the orders will be punished for selling illegal health products by getting jail time for up to three years and/or fined up to S$100,000 (approximately RM310,260).

Royal Expert Whitening Cream is available on several online vendors in Malaysia but there have been no reports whether the products here contain mercury as well.

The distributor of the product, Ortus Expert White (OEW) Group, stated that they will investigate this matter and said, “We take this matter seriously… the outcome of the inquiry will be communicated once the process has run its course.”

Always remember to buy your skincare products from reputable and trusted sources only!
