So, all Malaysians should be aware of the recent news that strict action will be taken against group chat admins if fake news is spread on groups in instant messaging apps.

Earlier this week on Wednesday (3rd May), the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) have released a list of do’s and don’ts for group chat admins to follow in order to prevent themselves from getting in trouble with the authorities.

Here’s what admins should take note of.

The Do’s:

  1. Inform members the reason for setting up the group and consider setting basic ground rules.
  2. Be mindful of rules/conditions of use by platform provider.
  3. Comment on posts to ensure discussions stay on track.
  4. Check posts regularly.
  5. Consider removing or blocking those who persist making inappropriate posts.
  6. Cooperate in investigations by law enforcement agencies.

The Don’ts:

  1. Be an absent administrator
  2. Breach community guidelines set by the platform provider.
  3. Encourage, incite, or abet inappropriate posts.
  4. Allow discussions to wander off topic.
  5. Be afraid to deal firmly with trolls or individuals who continuously breach the ground rules.
  6. Hinder investigations by law enforcement agencies.

Although this list may seem straightforward, they don’t really specify and go into detail on some of these do’s and don’ts. For example, what exactly constitutes an “inappropriate post”?

Does it only apply to fake news or is there more to it?

It’s such a broad term to use and it looks like anything could be deemed inappropriate this way since the exact definition of the term isn’t properly specified! Let’s hope they clarify this soon.

Whatever it is, remember to be careful with how you use your instant messaging apps, everyone!
