Over 17,000 Livestock & Pets Were Lost During The Recent Floods In Pahang

A total of 17,403 livestock and pets were lost during the recent floods in Pahang in which an estimated loss of over RM1.4 million were recorded as of 5 January 2022. As reported by national news agency Bernama, the state’s Veterinary Services Department director Dr Kamaliah Ghazali said that the loss involved 100 owners and breeders that are mostly located in Pahang’s Kuantan, Bentong and Pekan districts.

She further revealed that poultry makes up the highest number of deaths. Here’s the full list:

  • Chickens (14,849)
  • Ducks (1,100)
  • Turkeys (412)
  • Cows (307)
  • Rabbits (210)
  • Goats (132)
  • Sheep (64)
  • Cats (12)
  • Dogs (8)
  • Buffaloes (4)
  • Others (305)

Furthermore, Dr Kamaliah said that her department received information relating to 40,473 animals affected by the floods, 17,403 of which were reported to have died due to drowning. She further commented,

“I believe the numbers could be more as there are still owners and breeders who have not reported the death or loss of their animals… During the floods, we also helped in moving the animals to safer places and during the post-flood period as well.”

Apart from that, Dr Kamaliah said in an effort to ease the burden of farmers and animal owners affected by the floods, the department went down to the field to distribute animal food.
