Regarding the recent announcement on university students to return to campus starting October, Syed Saddiq has given several suggestions to the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE), urging them to not announce the SOPs at the very last minute.

“2 weeks left until October where universities are expected to reopen, hopefully there is no last-minute announcement,” he tweeted as he shared a TikTok video that states four suggestions to the MOHE. “I hope last year’s mistake will not repeat, so here are four suggestions for the ministry,” he said.

Firstly, he urged the ministry to give enough time for the university students as well as the parents to prepare for the reopening of campus, such as transportation and accommodation. “No last-minute announcements. Make sure that we are well prepared to execute this plan,” he said.

Next, he suggested speeding up the process of herd immunity on all campuses, where both doses of vaccines are given to all students. He also added that the execution of hybrid classes can be considered to ensure all Covid-19 SOPs are followed.

“Thirdly, please provide welfare assistance to the students as well as the parents,” he said, adding that many parents have lost their jobs during the past one and a half years due to Covid-19, thus the ministry should help them if they cannot afford to pay the school bill.

“We must help them. There are also many students who experience mental health issues, there should be early intervention to assist them,” said Syed Saddiq.

The Member of Parliament of Muar also urged the ministry to quicken the announcement of SOP on campus. “There are only two weeks left before the campuses reopen. Regarding the ventilation, how many students are allowed to attend class, all these issues must be solved as soon as possible,” he said.

He also gave his best wishes to all university students. Many netizens replied to the video and expressed their concerns and frustration over the issue. Some also hope that the ministry can update the latest SOPs for the students, especially those who are being stuck in the campus for the past few months.
