The Ministry of Education (MOE) is looking to recruit teachers on a ‘one-off’ basis to fill the vacancies throughout the country, especially in Sabah, Sarawak, Johor and Selangor. Education Minister Datuk Dr Radzi Jidin said it would involve the recruitment of a total of 18,702 Education Service Officers grade DG41.

As reported by Berita Harian, the recruitment advertisement will be published on July 7 while the placement of the teachers hired will begin in October. He said the effort was planned by the MOE under the National Rehabilitation Plan which was previously announced by the Prime Minister. He also explained that currently, the MOE is facing the challenge of a lack of teacher candidates from the Institute of Teacher Education (IPG) apart from the mismatch of subject options. He elaborated,

“MOE needs teachers for certain subjects but the supply does not meet the demand. There are situations where it is quite difficult for the MOE to hire new teachers to fill the vacancies.”

Radzi also mentioned that among the subjects detected to be experiencing a shortage of teachers are English, History, Special Education, Islamic Religious Education and Information and Communication Technology at the primary school level. In high school on the other hand, subjects lacking teachers are Bahasa Melayu, English, Special Education, Islamic Education and Design and Technology.

The special recruitment of teachers is a joint effort with the Public Service Department and the Teaching Services Commission (SPP) after all three parties have examined and identified constraints and approaches that could be taken to close the gap of existing teacher shortages to ensure it does not happen again in the future.
