We have been living in the pandemic for more than a year. It is common sense by now to put on a mask when we go out. However, there are still those who are stubborn and feel that it is their right not to wear one in public. In Singapore, there are even Safe Distancing Ambassadors (SDAs) who will remind and ensure members of the public comply with the safety measures put in by the Singaporean government and yet these stubborn individuals are still persistent on not wearing any masks.

One day before Heightened Alert Phase 2 on Saturday (15 May), a clip went viral on Facebook where a lady was shown to refuse to wear a mask while queueing in front of a shop at Marina Bay Sands. She was approached by the earlier mentioned SDAs who reminded her to put on a mask but she claims that the officers do not have the right to do so, even demanding them to show a badge.

Even with a red shirt with a “safe distancing ambassador” clearly written and can be seen by the lady, she insisted that they have to show a badge first before she can comply with their request.

At about the 30-second mark, the lady started to accuse the SDAs of harassing her and started creating a scene. She then decided that she will not engage in the conversation, still insisting that the SDAs show her their badges before they can tell her what to do. Ironically, throughout the video, she was actually holding a disposable mask on her right hand.

The Straits Times reported that the lady is currently being investigated by the police and she may be charged for offences under the Covid-19 (Temporary Measures) (Control Order) Regulations 2020. If convicted, she may be jailed for up to six months, or fined up to $10,000, or both. Those found guilty of public nuisance may be jailed for up to three months, or fined up to $2,000, or both.

Everyone, please comply with the SOPs and just wear a mask if you go out. This should already be a habit and most of us already know the benefits of wearing the mask. Please don’t be stubborn. Mmmkayy?
